Day care center to be built of logs in Kuusamo

17May

Kuusamo Log Houses will deliver logs for the day care center in Kuusamo. The general contractor of the construction project is Sikla Oy and it was designed by Arkkitehtitoimisto Saika Design Oy.

The architecture of the log day care center combines a modern look with tradition and is cozy and scaled for children. The 680-square meter day care center planned for the center of the city of Kuusamo will be built of 230 millimeter-thick, modern, narrow seam laminated logs using an advanced seam insulation technique. The shape of the building fits well together with the surrounding pitched-roofed buildings. The main exterior color of the building is dark gray, which is suitably livened by colorful roofs and overhangs. The log wall will be exposed on the inside, but color is used on wood-framed partition walls and fixtures. Each section will have its own fresh theme color.

The L-shaped building acts as the border of the inner courtyard, which continues into a playground and trekking area. The day care center and its grounds have a feel of nature: there are planting boxes, berry bushes and a teepee. Additionally, there is an adventure trail circling around the yard among the trees.

Logs are a very suitable building material for public buildings such as day care centers, schools and care facilities for the elderly. The use of logs in buildings reduces stress and improves mood. The acoustics of a log building are pleasant; when the volume level doesn’t rise, the atmosphere is more peaceful as well.

The building is ecological and a local product because the trees and processing of the logs takes place within a few kilometers of the actual construction site!
